The Institute for Therapeutic Massage (ITM) was established in Pompton Lakes in 1994 by Lisa Helbig, LMT, and was quickly approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. Classes began in 1995 and in 2001, the school became accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) the only specialized accreditor recognized by the United States Department of Education with a primary focus on massage education. Since then, the school has expanded into 6 locations, which includes 4 hospitals - the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ-University Hospital Newark), Morristown Memorial Hospital (Atlantic Mind Body Center), Holy Name Hospital, and Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabus Health Care System.
Owned and operated by massage therapists, the school offers 5 Programs:
- Massage and Bodywork Program
- Massage Therapy and Personal Training Program
- Eastern Bodywork / Shiatsu Program
- Oncology Massage Certification Program
- Clinical Massage Therapy Program
In addition to these programs, we have an extensive list of offerings in continuing education, with over 30 different classes being offered. The Institute for Therapeutic Massage is proud to see that students come from virtually all walks of life to learn massage therapy, ranging in age from 18 to retirement, are both male and female, on job hiatus or currently with a full-time career.
ITM maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio in both the hands-on and live-lecture classes, so that our students receive the maximum instructional effectiveness, individual attention, and support that they deserve. ITM School Mission Statement Our goal is to ensure that Institute for Therapeutic Massage graduates exceed the expectations of the massage, bodywork, and wellness community as competent, qualified, and ethical professionals.
